Exploring Child Development

Traditionally there have been very simple measurements for determining whether someone is an adult or a dependent minor. Many independent minors chose to classify themselves as a child with a legal guardian until after the age of 18. The age of an "adult" can vary from as young as 12/13 in some areas to around 25 at the oldest. Here in the U.S., the age is often 16/19 for girls and 17/19 for boys. Few boys can be classified as an adult with support system at 14/15. They will often have to convince the other men that they can provide value in their support system.

Studying child development requires a certain level of comfort with abstract concepts and with studying measurements of a childs economic, cognitive, and emotional growth as well as the physical form.

Salish recently explained she is five feet three inches which is average adult size in the 1990s of 5'2" to 5'4" near her home, with five foot six to five foot nine being considered tall back then. More recently, teenagers grow an average of 2-3 inches, 4-5 inches, or up to 6 inches between 15 and 19 over a 1 year period. This is known as a growth spurt. Adults also have growth spurts at 25, 32 and now 40 with muscle mass being maintained or managed to a smaller size up to age 85.
